 VOICE COLORS MODEL

The Voice Colors communication model is all about fostering independent self-expression for people with autism. Often people assume that behaviors like crying, hitting, or repetitive rituals are just innate to the autism diagnosis. Our central belief is that these behaviors are NOT innate to autism, and instead represent breakdowns in communication. Rather than treat the behaviors of people with autism, this model aims to address “why” the behavior exists in the first place. What is this person trying to say, and how can I, as their communication partner, help them convey it more effectively?

Much of communication for neurotypical people is intuitive, but for people with autism, it can be confounding, confusing, and completely overwhelming. Our model aims to break it down in a way that is accessible and allows people with autism to not only understand but also express who they are. Why? Because when people with autism can communicate effectively, many of the so-called “problematic behaviors” lessen or dissolve completely. And more importantly, everyone deserves to express their own individuality on their own terms.

Through high and low-tech visual supports, communication scripts, and new patterns of engagement, the Voice Colors Model prioritizes true understanding grounded in social relationships.
